Rev. Alex Chavez

I am originally from the city of Matamoros in the state of Tamaulipas, which is located in the eastern region of Mexico.  I am the youngest of 11 children.  My family and I immigrated to the United States in 1980.  I grew up in Porterville, California, where I attended Belleview Elementary School, Bartlett Middle School and Porterville High School. After graduating from high school, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend Fresno State University, I graduated in 1997 with a degree in civil engineering. Upon graduating from Fresno State University, I accepted a job offer from the California Department of Transportation as a civil engineer. I was a member of their engineering team for eight years until I decided to respond to the Lord’s call to the priesthood. Responding to the Lord’s call has brought me great joy and happiness. I was ordained a Catholic priest on May 19, 2012. My first assignment as a priest was at Sacred Heart Parish in Merced. My second assignment was at St. Francis of Assisi in Huron. Before arriving here at St. John’s Cathedral, I was assigned to The Good Shepherd Parish in Visalia. I am honored and humbled to be the rector of the cathedral. I am also very excited to be part of the St. John’s Cathedral community, and I ask for your continued prayers and support. I assure you that you are all in my prayers. I look forward to celebrating the sacraments and to provide spiritual guidance. I pray that we may all be open to working together and guided by the Holy Spirit can become one in faith, hope and love.
