Under the spiritual and pastoral direction of the Rector of Saint John’s Cathedral, the Custodian keeps the building and property in clean and orderly condition. Performs routine maintenance activities. Performs
heavy cleaning duties. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, or vacuums floors. Gathers and empties trash and performs related duties as required.
We are currently seeking a reliable and dedicated Custodian to maintain our facilities. We take great pride in the external and internal appearance of our facility and see it as a reflection of our Parish, so we expect our Custodian to take the same pride in their work. Our ideal candidate is careful and thorough, cleaning and tidying the premises with great care and an eye for detail. We prefer applicants who have some professional custodial experience, but we are willing to train the right person.
  • Keeps building and property in clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs routine maintenance activities.
  • Performs heavy cleaning duties.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, or vacuums floors.
  • Gathers and empties trash.
  • Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies restroom facilities.
  • Dusts furniture and walls, cobweb removal.
  • Cleans windows, mirrors, and partitions with soap and other cleansers.
  • Mixes cleaning solutions and chemicals in containers in preparation for cleaning, according to instructions.
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Cleans and polishes fixtures and furniture.
  • Shampoos or steam-cleans carpets and rugs.
  • Cleans and polishes furniture and fixtures.
  • Manages inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Notifies managers regarding the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems.


  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion for long periods of time.
  • Experience using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, Power Washer, and cleaning
  • solutions.
  • Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules.
  • Excellent Communication skills and ability to work with the public.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to safely use a step stool/ladder.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; or one to three years’ related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-onone and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to be creative in problem solving.
License: Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver License, preferred.

While performing the job duties and responsibilities of this position, an employee is regularly required to  work indoors-outdoors in a church building and related church structures including halls, lofts, basements, and conference rooms. Employees are required to a maintain external and internal appearance of our facility.
Employees are also required to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk to and from structures, and climb steps consistent with custodian duties. An employee is expected to operate a variety of cleaning office equipment. An employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include depth perception, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
